Battling the Inner Demons: Away vs. Toward Moves on the Seas of Values

Have you ever felt like your life is a boat adrift, yearning to dock at the shores of your dreams, but held back by unseen forces? In Russ Harris’s insightful book, “The Happiness Trap,” he paints a powerful analogy: We are sailors on a boat, navigating the tumultuous seas of emotions and thoughts. Our guiding stars are our core values, representing the islands we aspire to reach. Yet, lurking aboard are demons, representing unproductive thoughts and emotions that steer us away from our desired destinations.

These demons whisper doubts, incite fears, and fuel anxieties. They might be the voice that says, “You’re not good enough,” the fear of failure that paralyzes action, or the self-pity that drowns motivation. Their goal? To keep us circling in the open water, never reaching the shores of fulfillment.

But we have the power to fight back! Harris introduces the concept of away-from and toward-moves. Away-from moves are reactions driven by our demons, pushing us away from our values due to fear or discomfort. This might involve procrastinating on a crucial project, avoiding social interaction due to anxiety, or indulging in unhealthy habits to numb out painful emotions.

Toward-moves, on the other hand, are actions aligned with our core values, even when the demons scream in protest. It’s studying for that exam despite fear of failure, joining a social group despite anxiety, or practicing mindfulness instead of resorting to unhealthy coping mechanisms.

Recognizing these moves is the first step to taking control. When a demon whispers, ask yourself: Is this an away-from move, driven by fear or avoidance? Or is this a toward-move, aligned with my values and goals?

Remember, the demons are just passengers on your boat. You are the captain. Choosing toward-moves requires courage and commitment, but the rewards are immense. As you navigate away from their influence and closer to your values, you’ll experience greater well-being, purpose, and satisfaction.

Here are some tips to silence the demons and embrace toward-moves:

  • Identify your core values: What truly matters to you? When do you feel most alive and engaged?
  • Acknowledge the demons: Don’t judge them, but recognize their presence and their attempts to steer you away.
  • Practice mindfulness: Observe your thoughts and emotions without judgment, understanding their influence.
  • Take small, consistent steps: Toward-moves don’t have to be monumental. Start with achievable actions aligned with your values.
  • Seek support: Build a community of like-minded individuals who can cheer you on and help you stay on course.

Remember, the journey towards your values is rarely smooth sailing. But by understanding the demons of away-from moves and wielding the power of toward-moves, you can chart a course to a life filled with meaning and purpose. So, raise your sails, captain, and navigate your ship towards the shores of your dreams!
