Online CBT for Anger Management About
What is ANGER?
Anger is a natural reaction; it is a natural response to a threat and is part of being human. Most people feel angry from time to time in their life as a result of feeling frustrated, attacked or perhaps unfairly treated. It is even seen as a useful emotion at times as it can help motivate us to change or help us stay safe as part of our fight and flight mechanism.
Whilst these episodes of anger are manageable at most times by most, when it begins to impact your life and how you are feeling physically or emotionally for a prolonged period of time, it might be that you are suffering from anger issues.
Due to its instinctive nature, it can sometimes be tough to recognise whether one’s anger has become a problem. Recognising whether it has crossed this line is the first step. Someone suffering from anger issues may experience anger as their go-to emotion and stop feeling the emotions of others, resulting in destructive or unhelpful behaviour – both for yourself and for others around you. These feelings and behaviours may include:
outward aggression such as shouting, swearing, being threatening and being physically violent.
passive aggression such as refusing to speak to someone, doing things badly, being quiet or sulky without saying anything explicitly aggressive.
inward aggression such as feeling horrible feelings about yourself, denying yourself of things that would usually make you happy such as food, socialising or going for that promotion at work.
There are many reasons why you might have heightened anger including experiences from your childhood, which might have resulted through learned behaviours where you have grown up thinking that it is ok to act with aggression and so you did not develop the skills to manage your anger. Past experiences may also impact your behaviour in certain situations where you were not able to control your anger at the time may result in feelings of uncontrollable anger in the present day too. And in current times, it might get onset by many problems arising at the same time or stemming from your feelings of grief.
