What is PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)?
PTSD is an acronym for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is a type of disorder which may develop in some people who have faced or witnessed a scary, dangerous or shocking experience or event. The type of symptoms someone may be suffer include severe anxiety, flashbacks to the moment of the event, insomnia, and nightmares.
Most individuals who have gone through these situations will feel a “fight and flight” reaction during and immediately after this moment. Whilst these feelings may continue temporarily for a short while for some individuals whilst they are adjusting to what they have experienced, in time with good self-care, these symptoms will pass. However, for some, these symptoms will not pass and will begin to interrupt their day-to-day functioning; in these cases, they may well be suffering from PTSD. It is not uncommon for symptoms to not commence immediately after the event, but instead begin months even years after the experience.
There are many types of events which might occur in order for someone to develop PTSD: from witnessing things whilst out in combat, or the death of a close family member, to being involved in something life threatening, the situations are not always dangerous. As well as flashbacks, nightmares and anxious thoughts, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can impact suffers in other ways, including avoiding certain situations which might trigger a reminder of the day and arousal symptoms such as angry outbursts or feeling underlying tension. The symptoms of PTSD can seriously impair the way they can live their lives.
