What is DEPRESSION?
Depression is a type of psychological condition that impacts the mood of an individual, leaving them with long periods of feeling low or down. Whilst most people within their lifetime will go through a few periods of feeling sad and depressed when life throws challenges at them, clinical depression goes much further than this: the feeling is persistent and can last for weeks or even months.
Depression affects people in different ways, but the good news is that when given the correct therapy and support, for most individuals, the condition is treatable. There are a range of symptoms which those individuals suffering from depression may encounter. From losing interest and pleasure in things which used to be of interest, feeling hopeless and thinking they have let people down, to being very tearful.
Physically, there might also be other symptoms such as having an increased or decreased appetite, a loss of libido, trouble with sleep either needing more sleep than usual or trouble falling asleep, a lack of motivation and struggle sleeping. When severe, depression can make someone feel suicidal, not believing that their life is worth living.
Depression is a complex disorder, and the causes of depression vary from person to person. Whilst for some, it might be triggered by an event such as the death of someone close, or divorce, in others, there may not be an obvious occasion or time when the depression begun.
